Candelaria y flores blancas.
En hombros cruza barrancas
la Virgen de los Halagos.
Ya la siguen los aciagos
penintentes y dientudos
y nos va dejando mudos
su belleza claroscura.
Los versos cantan ventura
y bailan los linajudos.

Pero mi abuela se planta
entre el gentío desgarrado.
Son mil voces en el vado
y aún así se oye que canta.
Y en su verso la garganta
donde germinó la escencia
de tradición y clemencia
va rugiendo su versada
y su canto es vendaval
dulzura y jalea real
noche, luna y alborada.

Veracruz Comes to NY in the Biggest Fandango of the Year

JANUARY 26, 2012 NEW YORK CITY – Centuries old music and dance of Veracruz come alive with the first celebration to unite local Mexican bands that share a common vision of bringing to the world the music and dance of Mexico’s roots in New York.  On Thursday February 2nd, 7pm at Casa Mezcal NY, SON DE MONTÓN, MÉXICO BEYOND MARICHI, THE VILLALOBOS BROTHERS and JARANA BEAT, as well as other visual and plastic artists, will share and express their work with each other and the audience, culminating in a fandango where boundaries that divide the artists from the public are broken, all forming part of the same song, the same dance, the same tradition.

February 2, Day of the Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candles). Known in English as “Candlemas Day”, La Candelaria is the most important holiday in Son Jarocho, the biggest celebration taking place in the colonial river port of Tlacotalpan Veracruz.  During this time musicians, dancers, anthropologists, historians and the general public come together for three days of fandango, to experience this wonderful expression of the culture of the region.

Veracruz is a vibrant region of Mexico with a rich history of music, most notably Son Jarocho, a genre that originated in the colonial era and fuses Spanish, Indigenous, African and Arab rhythms to create a musical poetry that is a central part of the musical heritage of the region.  Son Jarocho has been experiencing a resurgence of interest through the works of young musicians who experienced the history of the genre through their elders, and are now reinterpreting a modern historical continuation of the music and a devotion to exposing new generations to the Son Jarocho heritage.

Already huge in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and San Antonio, Son Jarocho is not only a genre, but also a way of life that promotes a true sense of community.  Fandangos are captivating rhythmical encounters nearly impossible to stray from until the wee hours of the morning. The music is rich in poetry, and performed with traditional instruments such as jarana, requinto, leona and quijada (donkey jaw bone), accompanied by zapateado dancing as the main percussion instrument.

The Candelaria celebration will include performances by Son de Montón, Mexico Beyond Mariachi, The Villalobos Brothers and Jarana Beat , followed by the traditional fandango.  There will also be a short screening of Reed Rickert’s “The Third Root”, as well as photography on display by Mexican photographer Alddo Flores, and artwork by Veracruz native Alberto Villalobos.

Encuentro de Soneros en NY

Centuries old music and dance of Veracruz comes alive through the musical collaboration of SONANDO SUR and JARANA BEAT in a week of concerts, workshops and fandangos for New York’s first Encuentro de Soneros, bringing together son jarocho groups from Mexico and New York, all to be featured in an upcoming documentary.

Veracruz is a vibrant region of Mexico with a rich history of music, most notably Son Jarocho, a unique centuries old Mexican music genre that originated in the colonial era and fuses Spanish, indigenous and African rhythms to create a musical poetry that is a central part of the musical heritage of the region.  Son Jarocho is experiencing a resurgence of interest through the works of young musicians who experienced the history of the genre through their elders, and are now reinterpreting a modern historical continuation of the music and a devotion to exposing new generations to the Son Jarocho heritage.

SONANDO SUR is a collaboration between three Veracruz based musicians who are bringing the rich history of Son Jarocho music and dance to the global stage. The music is rich in poetry, and performed with traditional instruments such as jarana, requinto, and quijada, accompanied by zapateado dancing as the main percussion instrument.

Sonando Sur hopes to preserve the rich history of this music, and promote the culture of southern Veracruz to a wider audience by presenting documentaries, concerts, giving workshops (jarana and zapateado) and throwing fandangos.  They will be joined by members of Jarana Beat, Juan Lucero on the requinto and Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza (musical director) on the leona.
